HIGH LAWN'S CURRICULUM
INTENT
Our school vision is to … ‘provide opportunities that enable all children to develop a life-long love of learning, allowing them to achieve their full potential and to be prepared for life’s experiences’.
Our curriculum is unique to High Lawn, in that it is specifically tailored towards the needs and interests of the children. Through the curriculum, we aim to prepare pupils for the opportunities, experiences and responsibilities of adult life, developing citizens suited to modern Britain and laying a firm foundation for future learning. We seek to provide a broad, balanced, differentiated curriculum for all pupils and offer a wide range of exciting and challenging activities that encourage children to explore boundaries and ask questions irrespective of ability, background, ethnic origin or gender.
We acknowledge that people learn in many different ways and we recognise the need to develop strategies that allow all children to learn in ways that suit them. Opportunities are planned to cater for a range of different learning styles to ensure that all children can access the curriculum, identifying and harnessing children’s individual’s abilities and celebrating individual talents.
IMPLEMENTATION
Implementation describes the way in which we deliver our intent consistently each day. To do this, we have carefully designed our curriculum enabling learners to acquire relevant subject knowledge which underpins the application of skills. Skills are carefully and progressively mapped across each key stage and subject area.
Knowledge is consolidated and built upon to support retention and recall and is clearly outlined in subject Knowledge Organisers. This ensures that, by the time children leave our school, they have learned and are able to recall and apply the key information that we feel is important in order for them to be successful in the future.
Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)
In Early Years, we use the Foundation Stage curriculum framework, following the guidance in Development Matters, to support the learning and development of our children. An engaging, experience-rich, topic based curriculum follows and plans to meet the children’s interests, enabling all children to develop effective characteristics for learning. The curriculum is adapted and differentiated using the Ages and Stages of child development to meet the individual and special needs of all learners in a supportive, safe and happy environment.
Lessons are focused on the prime areas of learning: Communication and Language, Physical Development, Personal, Social and Emotional Learning, Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World and Art and Design. Communication and Language is a high priority and a total communication approach is used to ensure that children develop their vocabulary and can communicate effectively.
A nurturing and caring climate is fostered with staff working closely with families to support well-being and emotional security and development. Tapestry is used to share the children’s learning with parents/carers and is used to plan for their next steps in learning.
Key Stage 1 and 2
As a school, we recognise the importance of reading for all children and therefore, have a comprehensive and thorough approach to the teaching of reading across the school including, daily phonics lessons in Key Stage 1. Phonics is taught through Little Wandle, with a number of reading schemes used across the school to provide a wide variety of texts to help all children develop a love for reading. Writing is taught through Pathways to Writing with writing given a real purpose and audience for the children. Grammar, punctuation and spelling accuracy is embedded throughout the teaching of writing.
The Mathematics curriculum aims to ensure that all pupils become fluent in the fundamental of Mathematics including the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately. Children at High Lawn are taught to reason mathematically, solve problems and apply their mathematical skills in a variety of real life contexts.
In addition to English and Mathematics, children are taught to develop their skills, understanding and creativity in Science, Computing, History, Geography, Design Technology, Music, Art, Physical Education, Religious Education (which is based on the locally agreed syllabus) and Spanish in Key Stage Two. Violin and guitar tuition is also provided for children across the school who demonstrate a musical ability.
SMSC (Spiritual Moral Social Cultural) underpins all of the curriculum at High Lawn. It helps to give pupils the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to lead confident, healthy, independent lives and to become informed, active, responsible citizens. All members of staff are committed to encouraging in the children a knowledge of right and wrong and to take responsibility for their own behaviour. Children are also taught about mental health and wellbeing and take part in daily mindfulness activities.
Children are taught about the local community in which they live and are encouraged to work in co-operation with other members of the school community. Supporting charities, both local and further afield, is encouraged. All children are expected to undertake appropriate responsibilities within the class and school, e.g. caring for the classroom environment, participating in class assemblies and participating in out of school activities.
We aim to develop children’s enjoyment, confidence and skill in physical activity and introduce them to the pleasures of sport to help develop active children who benefit from a healthy lifestyle including taking part in the Daily Mile. Through a multi-skills approach, children develop their skills in football, netball, hockey, rounders and cricket, as well as athletics, gymnastics, dance and swimming.
Within our large school site, outdoor learning is used to support and enhance learning opportunities for children. Forest schools is organised by the trained Forest School leader and all classes have lessons in the forest linked to a particular topic or theme of learning. We also enhance and enrich the curriculum through a variety of activities including educational visits, school performances, visitors to school, after school clubs and have excellent links with local High Schools.
High Lawn’s curriculum has been designed to meet the needs of all our children. The high quality of ICT equipment and software also means Computing is an integral part of many teaching and learning experiences.
Assemblies
We build in opportunities to promote the spiritual, moral and cultural development of all our pupils through our daily acts of Collective Worship and our Religious Education scheme of work. Children are encouraged to develop their own beliefs through the use of ‘Big Questions’ in whole school and class assembly times.
Daily assemblies are of a broadly Christian nature and each month focuses on one of the school values. Weekly key stage and class assemblies provide a time to address any whole school or class issues, along with a weekly celebration assembly to acknowledge success, both in and out of school.
Homework
We firmly believe that the education of the children is a partnership between children, staff and parents/carers. Homework is used to extend school learning and also encourages children as they get older to develop the confidence and self-discipline needed to study on their own. It provides opportunities for parents/carers and pupils to work together and to enjoy learning experiences.
IMPACT
Our curriculum prepares children for the next step in their learning journey by creating learners who are enthusiastic and inspired to ask questions and seek new knowledge. By the end of Year Six, children leave school with the necessary skills to cope with life in modern Britain and have a sense of understanding of the world around them. The children of High Lawn are proud of their school, know they are part of the High Lawn family and are responsible citizens within their local community.
