Nursery Provision (Toddlers and Preschool)
“My child LOVES her time at High Lawn Nursery and is learning new things EVERY day!” (Parental comment).
High Lawn Nursery is open for 50 weeks of the year, both during school term time and also during school holidays. It provides high quality teaching and care, for currently up to 20 two year old children and 60 three/four year old children, in each of the morning and afternoon sessions. We have an excellent reputation in the community and highly qualified, professional staff, who support the learning of all the children in the setting. Nursery provision is led by a very experienced Nursery Manager and a full time Class Teacher who work closely with experienced teaching assistants and early years educators to cater for the needs of all children irrespective of their age and stage of development.
Being part of High Lawn Primary School, we also work very closely with Reception Class supporting a smooth transition throughout the Early Years.
Free Places
Some parents/carers may be entitled to free provision funded by the Government. These can be used across the day in patterns of 3 or 5 hours sessions. In addition to this, High Lawn Nursery offers flexible, full time and part time places for children (subject to availability). Please call school on the number below to discuss if this is an option for your child.

“My child really enjoys the forest work and returns home talking about looking for The Gruffalo with a happy, muddy face! All the activities at High Lawn Nursery have really engaged him and are definitely helping to grow his vocabulary and confidence. Thank you!” (Parental comment 2019).
Curriculum
At High Lawn Nursery, we provide a secure and safe environment for the children to learn in. We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum which consists of seven areas of learning. Holistic learning is built around the children’s ideas and interests to ensure maximum engagement in all activities. Each of the seven areas of learning and development are implemented through planned purposeful play, with a mix of adult led and child initiated play. We promote independence and help develop children’s confidence so that they are able to select and use the resources in the environment independently.
‘It is clear children make good progress particularly in adult-led activities which are well-focused, fun and purposeful. In these sessions, adults use questioning well to deepen children’s thinking, knowledge and their ability to apply their skills. The activities are well-devised based on the needs of each group of children’ (Ofsted 2015)
Assessment, Recording and Reporting
To ensure that all children continue to make progress throughout their time in nursery, we keep a record of what they can do and the progress that they are making. This starts with an ‘on entry’ assessment, which is completed after your child has been in school for six weeks and enables us to support them with the next steps in their learning. On-going observation and assessment continues throughout their time at High Lawn Nursery. There are opportunities to discuss your child’s progress throughout the year, both formally and informally and at the end of each academic year a full report is provided for parents, summarising your child’s attainment and achievements.
Learning Journals
Every child has Learning Journal which reflects their learning whilst he/she is in Nursery. This is completed on-line, in partnership with you, via the Tapestry App. We will regularly send you photos and ask you for your comments. The Learning Journal will consist of photos, videos, as well as observations to support your child’s next steps.
Throughout the year, there will be opportunities to share your child’s learning and to discuss your child’s progress.
‘Parents of children who are in the school’s Nursery and Reception praised the arrangements to help their children as they start at High Lawn. A typical comment was, ‘I would like to praise all the Foundation Stage staff for providing such a warm, nurturing and stimulating start to my children’s school life.’ (Ofsted 2015)
In Summary, High Lawn Nursery is an integral part of High Lawn Primary School and provides an excellent foundation for your child’s future learning and behaviour.
We welcome all applicants and look forward to sharing this amazing experience with you and your child.
